Create a Charming Barn Mailbox: A Step-by-Step Guide

Adding a barn-style mailbox to your property can enhance its rustic charm and functionality. This guide will walk you through the process of creating a durable, attractive, and functional barn mailbox that will withstand the elements and complement your home's aesthetic.

Gather Your Materials

Before you begin, ensure you have all the necessary materials and tools. Here's a list to help you get started:

  • Untreated cedar or redwood fence pickets (4 pieces, 6 feet long)
  • 1x6 cedar or redwood board (8 feet long)
  • 1x4 cedar or redwood board (8 feet long)
  • 1/2" plywood (1 sheet)
  • Exterior wood glue
  • 1-1/4" and 2-1/2" exterior screws
  • Stainless steel or galvanized hinges and latch
  • Exterior wood stain or paint
  • Circular saw
  • Drill and driver bits
  • Jigsaw
  • Tape measure
  • Pencil
  • Sandpaper (120-grit)
  • Clamps

Design Your Barn Mailbox

Before cutting any wood, sketch out your design. A simple barn mailbox consists of a front, back, and two sides, with a slanted roof. The front will have an opening for mail, and the back will have a door for accessing the mailbox's interior.

Measure and Cut the Pieces

Using your design as a guide, measure and cut the following pieces:

  • Front: 1x6 board, 12" x 18" (with a 10" x 12" opening for mail)
  • Back: 1x6 board, 12" x 18"
  • Sides: 2x fence pickets, 6" x 18"
  • Roof: 2x fence pickets, 6" x 12" (cut at a 45-degree angle on one end)
  • Base: 1x4 board, 12" x 18"
  • Door: 1/2" plywood, 6" x 10" (with a 1" x 2" handle cutout)

Assemble the Barn Mailbox

Begin assembling the mailbox by attaching the sides to the front and back pieces using 1-1/4" screws and wood glue. Ensure the sides are flush with the top and bottom of the front and back pieces. Allow the glue to dry according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Next, attach the base to the bottom of the mailbox using 1-1/4" screws and wood glue. Make sure the base is flush with the bottom of the sides, front, and back.

Attach the roof pieces to the top of the mailbox using 1-1/4" screws and wood glue. Ensure the angled ends of the roof pieces are flush with the front and back of the mailbox. Allow the glue to dry.

Attach the door to the back of the mailbox using hinges. Position the door so that it covers the mail opening when closed. Install the latch to secure the door.

Finish Your Barn Mailbox

Before applying stain or paint, sand any rough edges or surfaces using 120-grit sandpaper. Wipe away any dust with a damp cloth.

Apply exterior wood stain or paint to the mailbox, following the manufacturer's instructions. Allow the finish to dry completely before installing the mailbox.

Install Your Barn Mailbox

To install your barn mailbox, dig a hole about 18" deep and 12" wide. Place the mailbox in the hole, ensuring it's level and plumb. Fill the hole with concrete or gravel, tamping it down as you go. Allow the concrete or gravel to set before using the mailbox.

Your charming barn mailbox is now ready to welcome letters and packages while adding a touch of rustic elegance to your property.
