The sudden disappearance of KFC's BBQ chicken from menus across the United States left fans bewildered and craving. This beloved item, introduced in 2015, was a hit among customers, so why was it discontinued? Let's dive into the history and the reasons behind its departure.
KFC's BBQ Chicken: A Brief History
KFC's BBQ chicken was launched in 2015 as part of a summer menu, alongside other items like the BBQ Snacker and BBQ Twister. The dish was a resounding success, with its sweet and smoky flavors capturing the hearts of many. It returned annually, becoming a summer staple, until its abrupt disappearance in 2019.
Why Was KFC's BBQ Chicken Discontinued?
KFC has not officially announced the reason behind the discontinuation. However, industry experts and fans have speculated about several possibilities:
- Menu Overhaul: In 2019, KFC underwent a significant menu overhaul, removing several items to make way for new ones. The BBQ chicken might have been a casualty of this streamlining process.
- Supply Chain Issues: KFC has faced supply chain challenges in the past, which could have affected the availability of ingredients needed for the BBQ chicken.
- Customer Feedback: While the BBQ chicken was popular, it's possible that customer feedback indicated a preference for other menu items, leading KFC to discontinue it.

The disappearance of the BBQ chicken sparked a wave of disappointment among fans. Social media platforms were flooded with pleas and petitions, urging KFC to bring back the beloved dish. Some even created parody accounts, like @KFCBBQChicken, to keep the memory alive.
