The P60 engine in the E46 BMW M3 GTR Strassenversion was detuned to 380 horsepower to meet road-legal status. But the P60 V8 engine remained, and ultimately the M3 GTR Strassenversion became a pipe. Back in 2001, the E46 M3 entered the American Le Mans Series, but its 3.2-liter straight-six engine was outpaced by Porsche's 996 GT 3 RS.
So, BMW North America needed a fix, and fast. Their solution was to swap in a new V8 and call it a homologation special. Enter the 2001 BMW E46 M3 GTR, one of just three production-ready street cars, designed to put the P60B40 4.0.
