A bathroom tiled entirely in cheap white square tile would look like a school locker room. I think you could do an entire bathroom in subway tile with a few splashes of pattern and get a look that wouldn't age rapidly like this. Though when I was thinking of doing mine like this, a friend who flips houses said it would look like a prison shower.

Grout is harder to clean than tile, so I went with 600mm x 600mm tile on my shower, to minimize the amount of grout. Porcelain tile is denser and often a smoother surface than ceramic tile. Real stone is likely to be more porous, so I would not recommend natural stone for a shower.
