The BMW E31 is the first generation of the BMW 8 Series. It is a grand tourer built by BMW from 1990 to 1999 as a 2-door coupé, powered by either a V8 or V12 engine. Long, luxurious, sporty: BMW M played a key role in the development of the BMW 850 CSi E31.
The 1992 model may never have had the M in its name, but with its modified engine and host of other innovations, it is undoubtedly part of the M family. The V-12 just didn't adequately yank that 4153. BMW introduced the 8 Series for the 1991 model year. The first generation of 8 Series is known as the E31.
This new series of cars were luxury grand tourers, offered with V8 or V12 engine options. A total of four model series were offered, each with it's own transmission options: 840Ci - Automatic, 840Ci - Manual, 850i - Manual, 850i - Automatic, 850Ci - Manual, 850Ci - Automatic, 850CSi. The 850i was a head turner.
Chiseled lines and a low-sloping hood featuring pop-up headlights gave it some flavor of BMW's late-1970s M1 supercar. In profile, and with its big, wide taillights, the 850i showed a likeness to Ford 's new-for-1989 Thunderbird SC, a design that had taken inspiration from the previous BMW 6 Series. The CSi's brakes also came in for attention: the 324mm vented front and solid rear discs with single-piston calipers found on the 850i made way for 345mm front (now with two-piece floating calipers) and 328mm rear items.
