2002 BMW M3 GTR Straßenversion Built For Le Mans The BMW M3 GTR Strassenversion can trace its roots back to competition racing in the American Le Mans Series (ALMS), where the race car it is based on - of the same name, minus the 'Strassenversion'. Listen to the elusive M3 GTR E46 Strassenversion fire up its race car V8 engine as it leaves the BMW Group Classic workshop. BMW also got in on the action with the wide-arched and heavily spoilered E36 M3 GTR.

In order to homologate the GTR, a stunning Strassenversion was created. Fortunately, BMW did not have to begin entirely from scratch and used the stillborn 1992 E36 325i Class 1 Touring Car prototype conceived for the DTM as a starting point. Since BMW wanted to compete in this new series, which was highly anticipated by German motorsport fans, they proceeded to develop a race car based on the new E36 M3 called GTR.

Instead, the BMW Motorsport engineers decided to create a compact and lightweight V8 engine from scratch to power the new M3 GTR. This was an all-aluminium unit, featuring a 90° bank angle and displacing just under four litres. With the mandatory intake restrictors in place, it produced around 500 hp according to BMW.
