Why Concrete Preparation Matters

Concrete is porous, uneven, and often contains curing compounds or surface contamination that prevents proper adhesion. Tile adhesives require a clean, mechanically profiled surface to create a chemical and mechanical bond. Without this bond, the tile can shift, crack, or even de-bond from the concrete entirely. Investing time in meticulous prep saves significant time and money on repairs later.

Assess the Existing Slab

Before any other work begins, conduct a moisture test. High moisture levels in concrete can lead to tile delamination and efflorescence, a white, powdery residue that ruins grout. Attach a plastic sheet to the floor with tape and wait 24 hours; condensation indicates moisture problems. Also, check for any signs of cracking or instability by walking across the slab and listening for hollow sounds, which signify a poor substrate.

Identify Surface Contaminants
