Understanding the Bonding Challenge
Tile and concrete are vastly different materials, which creates inherent challenges for adhesion. Tile is non-porous and smooth, while concrete is porous and textured. A direct application of thinset mortar on an existing tile surface often fails because the mortar cannot mechanically lock into the smooth surface. To ensure a permanent bond, you must transform the slick tile into a rough, absorbent substrate that the new concrete can grip firmly.
Evaluating the Existing Tile
Before you mix a single bag of concrete, inspect the existing tile for stability. Tap each tile gently with a rubber mallet; a hollow sound indicates a loose tile or an imperfect mud bed beneath. Any tiles that rock or crack under pressure must be repaired or replaced. You are essentially building a new floor on top of the old one, so the old surface must be structurally sound. If the tiles are compromised, the concrete overlay will crack and delaminate as the substrate shifts.

Critical Surface Preparation
The most common reason a concrete overlay fails is inadequate surface preparation. You must maximize the surface area of contact between the old tile and the new concrete. This is achieved not by sanding the glossy glaze, but by creating a rough, clean, and chemically bonded interface. Skipping this step guarantees that the finish will peel away from the original surface.
- Mechanical Profiling: Use a heavy-duty angle grinder with a diamond cup wheel or a scarifying blade to grind the surface of the tile. You must grind until the shiny glaze is completely removed, exposing the rough aggregate underneath. Aim for a uniform matte finish across the entire area.
- Cleaning and Degreasing: After grinding, the dust and slurry created are incredibly fine and sticky. Sweep and vacuum thoroughly, then scrub the floor with a degreaser or trisodium phosphate (TSP) solution to remove any remaining oils or residues. Any remaining dust layer will act as a lubricant, preventing the concrete from bonding.

This creates a barrier that prevents the moisture from the concrete overlay from pushing up through the tile too quickly, which can cause blistering or delamination. The sealer also slightly penetrates the tile, slightly inhibiting the pull-back of the new concrete, which helps maintain a unified surface.

Polymer Bonding Agent
For most applications, a liquid polymer bonding agent is the industry standard. Mix this agent with the concrete according to the manufacturer’s instructions instead of water. When you spread the concrete, the polymer creates a tenacious, waterproof mechanical bond that locks into the pores of the tile and the aggregate of the concrete. This significantly increases the shear strength of the installation.
The Concrete Application Process
When mixing concrete for an overlay, you must choose the right type. While standard concrete mix works, a polymer-modified overlay concrete is superior because it is formulated specifically for bonding to old surfaces and managing shrinkage. These products are designed to be applied in thinner sections while maintaining high strength.
- Mixing Consistency: Mix the concrete to a consistency similar to a thick oatmeal or brownie batter. It should hold its shape when slumped but still flow to fill the surface. Avoid adding too much water, as this weakens the mix and increases shrinkage cracks.
- Application Thickness: Apply the concrete in manageable sections using a notched trowel or a squeegee. For heavy-duty floor coverage, aim for a thickness of at least 1/2 inch to 3/4 inch. If the coverage is too thin, it will crack underfoot or traffic.

For a slip-resistant finish, drag a broom lightly over the surface once the concrete begins to set.
