Unlike traditional horizontal shiplap, where the tongue and groove connect on the top and bottom edges, vertical shiplap requires you to cut the tongue and groove off on the sides. You are essentially converting a "clapboard" profile to create a tight, flush vertical seam. This method relies heavily on adhesive and proper fastening to ensure the stability of the installation, making surface preparation critical.
Preparing the Wall and Materials
A successful installation starts with a clean and stable substrate. If you are installing over drywall, ensure the surface is smooth and free of any joint compound ridges. For old plaster or uneven walls, you may need to shim high spots to maintain a consistent plane. Next, you must condition the wood. Engineered wood or reclaimed boards should be acclimated to the environment for a few days to minimize post-installation movement.
