The beds were covered. Hydrangeas are deciduous like hibiscus or mint. In winter, the plant stops sending sap to the extremities and the plant dies some or all of the way down to the ground.

Ideally we would like one with colorful blooms but something "hardy" and low maintenance is also important. You can plant a bunch of hydrangeas and follow all the instructions and have a beautiful garden, but it takes a lot of time for plants to be so bountiful as this picture I forgot to mention that probably the most important thing is lighting. They love morning sun and afternoon filtered light (through tree canopies).
