Some renovations find their inspiration through a broad, rolling process of discovery, but for one Melbourne kitchen, interior designer Megan Norgate says the design was clear from the moment she received the address. Her clients had bought an apartment in a celebrated Art Deco apartment building by architect Arthur Plaisted. When designing a new kitchen and bathroom for this 1930s South Yarra apartment, Brave New Eco founder Megan Norgate ensured the upgrades would blend seamlessly with the original architecture.

She incorporated the classical sculptural curves of the Art Deco era, and stuck to a colour palette inspired by the building details - think jade tiling, stucco walls and rich tobacco stained timber. Set within an Art Deco building in South Yarra, the home of Brave New Eco founder and design director Megan Norgate was designed with minimal intervention, focused on energy.

The team at Brave New Eco took on the renovation, keeping some key features, such as the wonderful checkerboard tiles. "They were in perfectly good condition and we quite liked the pattern. It plays well with the glass-brick windows," says design director Megan Norgate.

Megan has been working in the field of design for 20 years. D Recycled french doors were used for the pantry doors in this vintage. The home had many wonderful, pre-existing art deco-style features however previous renovations had added poorly configured small rooms onto the back; resulting in a house that lacked natural light, felt closed in, and cost a fortune to heat in the winter.
