The gardens were named The National Rhododendron Gardens in 1960; the name was changed to the Dandenong Ranges Botanic Garden in 2017, after community consultation. The creation of the Chelsea Australian Garden at Olinda, which opened in 2023, has added yet another reason to visit the Botanic Gardens and the Dandenong Ranges. The Dandenong Ranges Botanic Garden is Victoria's premier cool-climate garden.

The Gardens have no entry fee, which is amazing considering how well kept they are and the scale of them. There are many gardens and teahouses in Olinda, most of which have an entry fee, however not only are the National Rhododendron Gardens free, but in my opinion, they are also the most diverse, most tranquil and most interesting also. The Dandenong Ranges Botanic Garden (formerly the National Rhododendron Garden) is host to brilliantly coloured blooms of rhododendrons, azaleas, camellias, cherries and daffodils.
