The design is more traditional than some of BMW's more. With styling by Klaus Kaptitza, the 8 Series was deliberately pitched at a higher level than the 6 Series. BMW was aiming for the same customers as the Porsche 928 and made its intentions clear by launching the E31 with a 5.0-litre V12 engine.

This was the first production V12-powered car to be offered with a six-speed manual gearbox, or customers could opt for a four. Broadly, the 8 Series replaces the 6 Series. But it gets a new number because it's grander than that.

Also, the number 6 now resides on the rump of a big practical hatchback, the 6 Series Gran.
