Cutting baseboard for an angled wall presents a unique challenge for both DIY enthusiasts and seasoned professionals. Unlike a standard 90-degree corner, an angled wall requires a precise compound miter cut to ensure a tight, seamless fit. Mastering this technique is essential for achieving a polished, professional finish that looks custom-made rather than hastily installed.
Before making the first cut, careful measurement and planning are crucial. You must determine the exact angle of the wall corner, which is rarely a perfect 45 degrees. Using a digital angle finder provides the most accurate reading, allowing you to input the specific angle into your miter saw. This initial step eliminates guesswork and sets the stage for a flawless cut that conforms perfectly to the unique geometry of your space.
Essential Tools for Precision Cutting
Having the right tools is non-negotiable when working with angled cuts. While a standard miter saw is a starting point, a power miter saw with dual or compound capabilities is the ideal instrument. This feature allows the blade to tilt left or right in addition to pivoting vertically, which is necessary to adjust for the vertical plane of the baseboard against the angled wall.

Marking the Back Cut

Navigating the Front Cut
After completing the back cut, you must address the front of the baseboard to create the coped joint. This involves cutting the face of the molding perpendicular to the angle of the back cut, essentially removing the excess material that would create a gap. Lay the freshly cut back of the baseboard flat against the miter saw fence, with the saw blade angled to the opposite side of the desired angle.

Instead of cutting the entire width of the board, make a plunge cut directly into the face of the material, following the contour of the adjacent piece of baseboard. This technique, known as coping, allows the new piece to nest perfectly into the profile of the existing baseboard. It requires a steady hand but results in a joint that is far more durable and visually appealing than a standard miter joint.
Test Fitting and AdjustmentDry fitting the cut pieces together is the most important step before securing them in place. Place the two pieces into the corner without adhesive or nails.
