The Importance of a Solid Base
Before a single block is laid, the integrity of the corner depends entirely on the foundation. A common mistake is to rush this step, leading to uneven settling and a collapsed angle down the line. You must excavate the area beyond the visible footprint, removing soft topsoil and replacing it with a mix of compactable gravel and crushed stone. This granular base provides the necessary drainage and load distribution to support the weight of the blocks, especially at a vulnerable point like a corner where pressure is concentrated.
Preparing the Edge and String Line
To achieve a perfect square, you cannot rely on eye alone; you need a physical guide. Drive a sturdy stake into the ground at the exact location of the inside corner of your wall. Tie a string line tightly to this stake, stretching it along the intended path of the wall. This string acts as your plane, ensuring every block is aligned perfectly straight. For the corner itself, place a second stake perpendicular to the first, creating a right-angle reference that you will reference for every layer.
Laying the First Course
The first course sets the stage for everything that follows, so precision is critical. As you place the landscape blocks along the string line, focus on interlocking them tightly. Many systems feature lip and groove designs, but even with these, you must actively tap each block into its neighbor using a rubber mallet. The goal is to eliminate any gaps that could allow water to penetrate or cause the units to shift independently.
