Replacing A BMW N55/S55 Eccentric Shaft If you tackle an Eccentric Shaft replacement, ensure you have some decent wrenching experience, an experienced friend to support you, or both.
just had my mechanic (bmw certified, private garage specializing in bmw) replace my BMW Valvetronic Eccentric Shaft Sensor. car would start, had to have it towed there, he diagnosed, and repaired. $640 for the BMW Valvetronic Eccentric Shaft Sensor (FCP has for $460) $110 for gaskets/seals $730 for labor $1480 for the repair, plus $135 diagnostic charge would really like some input. thanks.
A failure of the actual shaft is much less likely than a problem with the Eccentric Shaft Sensor (ESS) or the Valvetronic motor. Even if the sensor is bad, the whole Valvetronic assembly can be removed and replace independent of the timing system. Taking off the valve cover is more difficult. There is no reason why it should cost anywhere near $7k.

N55 usually requires valvetronic motor, eccentric shaft and needle bearings. I've never seen an N20 that needed an eccentric shaft; just the valvetronic motor.

Eccentric shaft sensors is not the same as a cam sensor. The ESS is about $250-$450 depending on whether you get OEM or not. There are 3 gaskets that should be replaced and it's about $50-$70ish for them. It's about 3 hours of labor to replace the valve cover gasket, valvetronic motor gasket, and ESS gasket.

Make - F10 2011 535i xDrive Location - Rhode Island Mileage - 141,000 I got the 'Drivetrain Malfunction' warning last week. I took it to a local shop to read the codes, here's the result. I then took the car to a BMW dealership and they said the eccentric shaft and motor needs to be replaced. The quote is $4000. Looking for advice: Is this reasonable? Assuming an independent shop could do it.
