Building decking steps is often the final, most satisfying phase of a deck project, transforming a flat platform into a complete and functional outdoor space. Understanding Rise and Run

The foundation of any stair layout is the relationship between the rise (height) and run (depth) of each step. Building codes typically mandate a maximum rise of around 7 ¾ inches and a minimum run of 10 inches for comfort and safety. To calculate the total rise—the vertical distance from the top of the decking to the ground—simply measure the difference in height. Divide this total rise by your chosen rise per step; the resulting number gives you the exact number of steps needed. This calculation ensures your design is both efficient and ergonomically sound.

Material Selection and Preparation
