This term will become more prevalent to you if you are swapping an E36 engine into another E36 or a different chassis. EWS is also on other models like E34, and other engines like M60, but for the sake of this article, we are only going to be talking about the E36.
I have not really investigated how to remove EWS from the E36 M3, but can do it for some othe cars such as the 95 325i/m3, Euro S50B32, USA 328i (MS41) and soon for the S54. Even though this relates to an E36, I'm posting it here because it has the same M50 engine and electrical system as the E34. I need some help, I have a 95ti that I just did a M44 engine conversion in and I want to bypass or disable the EWS to get it running. I rather not have to drag it to the dealer to get the EWS "aligned" until after I get it going and work the bugs out. Thanks for any help.
The only downside of eliminating the EWS2 system is that now any E36 key will be able to start your car. For me, this wasn't a huge issue. My car has 212k miles, is an auto, and isn't in the best shape.
If someone steals it they might be doing me a favor. Works with any OBD2 E36 (96 or later). I'm not familiar with how EWS.
