Removing pantry doors may seem like a simple task, but it requires a methodical approach to avoid damaging the cabinetry or the door itself. Whether you are planning a deep clean, conducting a kitchen renovation, or replacing old hinges, understanding the correct procedure is essential. This guide walks you through the process step-by-step, ensuring you complete the job efficiently and safely.
Tools and Preparation
Before you begin, gathering the right tools is crucial for a smooth removal. Working unprepared can lead to frustration and potential damage to the finish or alignment of the pantry. Proper preparation sets the stage for a successful and stress-free experience.
Screwdriver (Phillips or flat-head, depending on hinge type)
Adjustable wrench or socket set
Soft cloth or protective gloves
Masking tape (for marking hardware)
Level (for reinstallation)
Safety and Environment Setup
Start by clearing the area in front of the pantry to provide ample workspace. Ensure the kitchen is well-lit so you can see the hardware clearly. If the doors are heavy, consider having a second person assist to prevent strain or injury. Protecting the floor with a drop cloth is also wise to catch any falling debris.

Identifying Hinge Type
The mechanism holding your pantry doors in place dictates the removal process. Most modern kitchens use either European concealed hinges or surface-mounted hinges. Identifying the type early allows you to approach the task with the correct technique.
Hinge Type
Location
Removal Complexity
Concealed (European)
Inside the cabinet frame
Moderate; requires a hinge puller or screwdriver
Surface-mounted
Visible on the frame and door
Simple; requires only unscrewing
Removing the Doors
Once the hinge type is identified, you can proceed with the detachment. For surface-mounted hinges, the process is straightforward: carefully unscrew the hinges while supporting the door to prevent it from swinging shut abruptly.
If you are dealing with concealed hinges, locate the adjustment screws usually found on the hinge frame. Loosen these screws slightly to allow the door to tilt inward, creating clearance from the cabinet. Gently lift or pivot the door outward to disengage it from the mechanism. Take care to control the movement to avoid stressing the hinges.
187K views · 1.3K reactions | I made these pantry doors a few years ago from some pine bi-fold doors I picked up in the sale! I wanted them to resemble bakery style doors so I stained & distressed them & added vintage rolling pins for handles! They have been much loved over the years & have been the most talked about feature in our home! It seems a lot of you love the rustic & unique look! But as time goes by my tastes have change & I wanted a cleaner & more modern look so I decided to give them a little makeover! I started by removing the top 2 panels to create windows, sanded & filled before painting with @farrowandball in the colour Dropcloth! For the frosted windows, I measured the open spaces & got some Perspex cut to size @cutmy.uk This was soooo much easier than cutting them myself! I ordered some reeded window film from @amazonuk which was super easy to attach to the Perspex…just add water & smooth out! I do still have a few air bubbles to get rid of but nothing a credit card won’t fix! I secured into place using beading on the inside! You will see that I used a flame on the handles…this is a great way to dull down bright gold metals! These handles were from another project & they work perfect, don’t you think? I really love the way they turned out & that the sometimes messy contents of our pantry is blurred out! Links in stories & saved to links highlight for your future reference! Let me know what you think of this makeover! Do you prefer the new look? Handling and Storage
With the doors removed, handle them by the edges to prevent fingerprints or smudges on the finish. If the doors are being stored temporarily, wrap them in blankets or moving pads to protect against scratches. Labeling the doors and their hardware ensures a perfect match during reinstallation.
Reinstallation Tips
When you are ready to put the doors back, reverse the removal process. Align the hinges precisely with the mounting holes and tighten the screws gradually. Use a level to confirm that the door hangs straight and closes smoothly. Adjust the hinges as necessary to achieve a perfect fit, ensuring the pantry functions beautifully.
