Why Patience Matters to God

In the grand tapestry of life, patience often emerges as a thread that weaves through our existence, connecting us to our higher power, be it God, the universe, or a higher consciousness. This virtue, so often underestimated, plays a pivotal role in our spiritual growth and our relationship with the divine. But why is patience important to God?

Patience, in essence, is a form of trust. It is trusting in a power greater than ourselves, believing that things will unfold as they should, in divine timing. It is this trust that God values, for it is the foundation upon which faith is built. As the Bible teaches us in Romans 5:4, "And endurance develops character, and character develops hope."

Patience as a Form of Worship

Patience is not just about waiting; it's about how we wait. When we wait with patience, we are, in a sense, worshipping God. We are acknowledging His wisdom, His plan, and His timing. We are saying, "I trust You, God. I know You have a purpose in this." This act of trust is deeply pleasing to God.

In the Old Testament, we see King David, a man after God's own heart, waiting patiently for the Lord. In Psalm 40:1, he writes, "I waited patiently for the Lord; he turned to me and heard my cry." David's patience was not passive; it was an active trust in God's goodness and sovereignty.

Patience in Trials

Patience is particularly important during trials and tribulations. It is during these times that our faith is tested, and our patience is stretched. But it is also during these times that we have the opportunity to grow spiritually. As James 1:2-4 tells us, "Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything."

God uses our trials to shape us, to make us more like Him. When we respond to trials with patience, we are allowing God to do His work in us. We are trusting that He has a purpose in our pain, and that He will use it for our good and His glory.

Patience in Waiting for God's Promises

Patience is also crucial when we are waiting for God's promises to be fulfilled. Whether it's waiting for a breakthrough, a healing, or a dream to be realized, waiting can be challenging. But it is in the waiting that our faith is strengthened, and our character is refined.

In Habakkuk 2:3, God tells the prophet, "For the revelation awaits an appointed time; it speaks of the end and will not prove false. Though it linger, wait for it; it will certainly come; it will not delay." God is reminding us that His promises are sure, and they will come to pass in His perfect timing. Our job is to wait patiently, trusting in His faithfulness.

Patience as a Reflection of God's Character

Patience is not just something God values; it's also a reflection of His character. God is patient with us, despite our flaws and failures. As 2 Peter 3:9 tells us, "The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance." God's patience towards us should inspire us to be patient with others and with ourselves.

Moreover, God's patience is not just about waiting; it's about working. In His patience, He is working all things together for our good (Romans 8:28). He is using our waiting to shape us, to teach us, and to draw us closer to Him.

Patience in Intercession

Patience is also important in our prayers and intercessions. We live in a world that wants instant gratification, but God's timing is not our timing. Sometimes, our prayers are answered immediately, but other times, we have to wait. And in the waiting, we must persevere in prayer.

In Luke 18:1-8, Jesus tells the parable of the persistent widow, who keeps coming to a judge with her request. The judge finally grants her request not because she is worthy, but because she keeps bothering him. Jesus tells us to be like that widow, to keep praying and not lose heart. Our persistence in prayer is a reflection of our patience and trust in God.

Patience in Serving Others

Patience is also a key virtue in serving others. When we serve with patience, we are serving like Jesus served. He was patient with His disciples, with the crowds, and even with His accusers. He served them not out of duty, but out of love, and with great patience.

In Matthew 20:28, Jesus tells us, "Just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many." When we serve others with patience, we are following Jesus' example and fulfilling His command.

In the end, patience is not just about waiting; it's about trusting. It's about trusting that God is who He says He is, that He loves us as He says He loves us, and that He is working all things together for our good as He says He is. And so, we wait, not with crossed arms or furrowed brows, but with hearts full of trust and hope. For we know that our God is patient, and He is working in us and through us, even in the waiting.
