Why Cement Board is the Ideal Substrate for Tiling
Unlike older methods that involved building a mud bed with sand and cement, using cement board offers significant advantages in terms of speed and stability. Cement board is rigid, fire-resistant, and does not rot or decay when exposed to moisture, making it an excellent alternative to traditional plywood in wet environments. When you tile floor on cement board, you create a surface that is uniformly stable, which is crucial for preventing tile flexing and eventual grout failure.
Preparation and Surface Assessment
Before laying a single sheet of board, you must prepare the concrete substrate meticulously. The surface needs to be clean, dry, and free of any oil, grease, or loose particles that could compromise adhesion. Inspect the concrete for cracks or uneven spots; these should be repaired with a suitable concrete patching compound to ensure a level foundation. A flat surface prevents stress on the tile grout lines and ensures a professional-looking finish.

Ensuring a Stable Foundation
Check for any deflection or bounce in the concrete slab. If the surface gives way under pressure, it indicates a lack of structural integrity that must be addressed before tiling. You may need to level the entire area with a self-leveling compound. Taking the time to perfect the substrate at this stage saves you from dealing with cracked tiles or hollow sounds later in the process.
Layout and Cutting the Cement Board
Planning your tile layout is essential to avoid ending up with sliver cuts at the edges. Dry-lay your tiles on the cement board to determine the starting point, usually from the center of the room or the main focal point. Mark the board with a pencil, and cut the sheets to size using a carbide-tipped scoring tool. Score the surface deeply, then snap the board cleanly along the line for a precise fit.
Securement and Seaming
Once cut, the cement board must be secured to the concrete using appropriate fasteners. Use corrosion-resistant screws spaced approximately 6 to 8 inches apart along the edges and 12 inches in the field. It is critical to countersink the screws slightly below the surface to prevent them from creating bumps under the thinset mortar. When installing multiple sheets, stagger the seams so they do not align, which prevents weak lines that could lead to surface failure.

The Tiling Process on Cement Board
With the substrate fully installed and seams properly taped, you are ready to apply the thinset mortar. Using a notched trowel, spread the adhesive evenly across the board, ensuring full contact with the cement backer. Carefully place the tiles into the adhesive, twisting them gently to ensure a strong bond. Maintain consistent spacing for grout lines, using tile spacers to achieve uniformity across the entire floor.
Grouting and Finishing
After the thinset has cured, the next phase involves filling the joints with grout. Choose a grout that is suitable for floor traffic and slight movement, as cement board does have some flexibility. Work the grout diagonally across the tiles with a rubber float, forcing the material deep into the seams. Once the grout haze sets, polish the surface with a damp sponge to remove excess residue, revealing a clean and professional grout line.
