The German declaration of war on Poland on September 1, 1939, marked a pivotal moment in history, setting the stage for the catastrophic events of World War II. This act of aggression, triggered by the Nazi regime's expansionist policies, was a direct violation of the Munich Agreement signed just a year prior, and it caught the world by surprise.

Background: The Munich Agreement and German Aggression

In 1938, Nazi Germany, led by Adolf Hitler, annexed Austria and the Sudetenland region of Czechoslovakia, with little resistance from the international community. The Munich Agreement, signed by Germany, Italy, France, and Britain, allowed Germany to occupy the Sudetenland in exchange for peace. However, this policy of appeasement failed to satisfy Hitler's ambitions, and Germany's aggressive foreign policy continued.

German Demands and Polish Refusal

In the spring of 1939, Hitler turned his attention to Poland, demanding the return of the Free City of Danzig and a corridor through the Polish Corridor to East Prussia. Poland, supported by Britain and France, refused these demands, stating that they would not negotiate under duress. Hitler, undeterred, began to prepare for war.

The Invasion Begins

On August 31, 1939, Germany and the Soviet Union signed the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact, a non-aggression pact that secretly planned for the division of Eastern Europe between the two totalitarian powers. Two days later, on September 1, Germany launched a surprise attack on Poland, marking the beginning of World War II in Europe.

Germany employed its blitzkrieg (lightning war) tactics, using rapid, concentrated force to overwhelm Polish defenses. The German military, equipped with advanced weapons and tactics, quickly gained the upper hand, pushing deep into Polish territory.

International Response

Britain and France, honoring their guarantees of Polish independence, declared war on Germany on September 3, 1939. However, their initial response was largely ineffective, as the Western Front remained relatively quiet, a period known as the "Phony War" or "Sitzkrieg."

The Fall of Poland

The Polish military, despite its brave resistance, was no match for the German onslaught. On September 17, 1939, Warsaw fell to the Germans, and on October 6, the Polish government surrendered. Poland was subsequently divided between Germany and the Soviet Union, with the German occupation lasting until the end of the war.
