Jamie Oliver's Butterfly Cake: A Whimsical Baking Adventure

Jamie Oliver, the renowned British chef, has brought joy to our kitchens with his delightful and innovative recipes. One of his most charming creations is the Butterfly Cake, a whimsical treat that's as fun to make as it is to eat. This isn't just a cake; it's a baking project that lets you explore your creative side while indulging your sweet tooth.

Understanding the Butterfly Cake
The Butterfly Cake is a unique twist on the classic Victoria sponge cake. It's designed to look like a butterfly, with a round cake representing the body and two semicircular cakes forming the wings. The cake is then decorated with colorful icing and edible decorations to bring the butterfly to life.

Ingredients You'll Need
Before you start, ensure you have all the ingredients ready. Here's a list of what you'll need:

- 200g unsalted butter, softened
- 200g caster sugar
- 4 medium eggs
- 200g self-raising flour
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 2 tbsp milk
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- For the buttercream: 100g unsalted butter, softened, 300g icing sugar, 1.5 tbsp milk
- Food coloring (optional, for decoration)
- Edible decorations (sprinkles, edible glitter, etc.)
Baking the Cake
The first step is to preheat your oven to 180°C/160°C fan/gas 4. Grease and line two 20cm round tins and one 23cm round tin with baking parchment.

In a large bowl, cream the butter and sugar together until pale and creamy. Beat in the eggs, one at a time, then fold in the flour, baking powder, milk, and vanilla extract. Divide the mixture evenly between the tins and smooth the tops with a spatula.
Bake the 20cm tins for 20-25 minutes and the 23cm tin for 25-30 minutes, or until a skewer inserted into the center comes out clean. Leave the cakes to cool in the tins for 5 minutes, then turn them out onto a wire rack to cool completely.
Assembling the Butterfly Cake

Once the cakes are cooled, it's time to assemble your butterfly. Cut the 23cm cake in half to create the wings. Place the 20cm cake on a serving plate or cake stand, then spread a layer of buttercream on top. Place one wing on either side of the cake, using the buttercream to stick them in place.
Spread the remaining buttercream over the wings and the body of the cake. If you're using food coloring, now's the time to add it to the buttercream for a colorful finish. Use a palette knife to create a smooth, even layer of buttercream, then use a fork to create the butterfly's veins and add texture.

Finally, decorate your butterfly with edible decorations. You can use sprinkles, edible glitter, or even piped icing to create a beautiful, whimsical design. The possibilities are endless!
Serving and Storing
The Butterfly Cake is best served at room temperature. It will keep in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days, but it's best to enjoy it as soon as possible after decorating.
Remember, baking is a fun and creative process. Don't be afraid to experiment with different flavors, colors, and decorations. Your butterfly cake doesn't have to be perfect; it just has to be yours.
