They celebrated by putting a version of the V12 engine that won the race into their family.

The X5 LM was built off the E53 generation using that race-winning 700-hp V12 LMR engine. It was a feasibility study by none other than Albert Biermann, who is now producing thrills for Hyundai's. As well as the 700bhp the V12 engine produces in the X5 Le Mans, it offers a useful 531lb ft of torque at 5,000rpm.

That's enough to accelerate the car from zero to 62mph in 4.7 seconds and on. You've probably heard of the BMW X5M. But did you know about its V-12 powered, record-setting older sibling, the X5 Le Mans?

The BMW X5 Le Mans Concept was a one-off version of the first-generation E53 X5, designed to push the boundaries of what an SUV could be. It was unveiled in 2000 at the 70th International Motor Show in Geneva, though this high-performance SUV was never intended for production. Instead, it demonstrated BMW's engineering and motorsport abilities, with the headline being the 6.1-liter S70/3 V12.

But few of us remember the X5 Le Mans, a crazy, one-off show car powered by a race-spec V12 that lapped the Nürburgring faster than an E46 M3 CSL. This is the BMW X5 LM. It's a prototype from the era before the super-SUVs of today, powered by the same V12 that propelled the BMW V12 LMR to victory at Le Mans.

That's 700hp and 531ft/lbs under the hood that made this the first sub-8-minute SUV around the Nurburgring. And this was all in 2000, years before Porsche made the Cayenne Turbo and set the SUV world ablaze with performance. BMW Group Classic looks back at the one-off X5 Le Mans, a concept SUV featuring the naturally aspirated V12 engine used by the McLaren F1 race car.

The company built the X5 with a 6.0 L P75 V12 from their Le Mans LMR race car. The motor produces 700+ horsepower which is more than the Le Mans race car because the engine in the X5 does not have air restrictors.
