The Z3 saw production from '96 to '02, and so using a little bit of guesswork, that V12 is probably the 5.4-litre twelve-pot from the 750i and 850i; a unit producing some 321bhp and 361lb ft of. BMW calls the car "a complete overkill," built just to see if it could squeeze a V12 into a Z3.

Although BMW offers precious few details on the wild mash-up, the engine in question is believed to be the 5.4. Two of them however, got out attention: the BMW Z3 M Roadster V12 and the M5 E34 Convertible. BMW unveiled the Z3 back in 1996 as a tiny sports car based on the E36 3 Series platform.

However BMW built this prototype in 1999 to prove any of their engines could fit into a Z3. This Z3 prototype now has a naturally aspirated 5.4 L M73 V12 from a E38 7. The V12 was found in cars such as the 7 Series E38, 8 Series E31, and the lesser-known Rolls-Royce Seraph.

Due to the heavy V12 engine being fitted so far towards the front of the otherwise lightweight Z3, the vehicle had a weight distribution of 70/30, making it highly unstable whilst driving. First revealed in 2012.
