Crafting the Perfect Tea Box: A Comprehensive Guide
Creating a beautiful and functional tea box is a rewarding DIY project that combines artistry and practicality. Whether you're packaging your homemade tea blends as gifts or want to organize your tea collection, this step-by-step guide will help you make a tea box that's as delightful to look at as it is to use.
Gather Your Materials
Before you begin, ensure you have all the necessary materials. Here's a list to help you get started:
- Cardstock or thick paper (for the box body)
- Thinner paper or cardstock (for the lid and dividers)
- Ruler
- Pencil
- X-Acto knife or scissors
- Glue stick or craft glue
- Scoring tool or bone folder (optional, for creasing)
- Tea (for testing your new box!)
Design Your Tea Box
First, decide on the size and shape of your tea box. A square or rectangular box works well for tea, as it allows for easy organization of different tea types. Consider the size of your tea packets or tins when determining the dimensions. Once you've decided on the size, sketch out your design, including the lid and any internal dividers.

Create a Template
Using your sketch as a guide, create a template for your tea box. To do this, draw the desired dimensions on your cardstock, adding tabs for assembly. The tabs should be about 1/4 to 1/2 inch wide and will help you glue the box together. Make sure to include a template for the lid and any dividers you want to add.
Cut and Score
Carefully cut out your templates using an X-Acto knife or scissors. Once cut, use a scoring tool or bone folder to score the crease lines. Scoring makes it easier to fold the paper and ensures sharp, clean creases.
Assemble the Box Body
Begin assembling the tea box by applying glue to the tabs on the outer edges of the box body. Fold the box along the scored lines, bringing the tabs together to form the sides of the box. Press the tabs firmly to ensure a strong bond. Allow the glue to dry completely before proceeding.

Create Dividers (Optional)
If you want to organize your tea by type, create dividers to separate them. Cut out the divider templates and score the crease lines. Glue the dividers together, making sure to leave enough space between them to accommodate your tea packets or tins. Allow the glue to dry completely before placing the dividers inside the box.
Attach the Lid
Assemble the lid in the same way as the box body, gluing the tabs together. Once the glue has dried, attach the lid to the box using a hinge mechanism or simply place it on top of the box. If you'd like to add a decorative touch, consider wrapping the lid and box in coordinating paper or adding embellishments like stickers or washi tape.
Test Your Tea Box
With your tea box complete, it's time to fill it with your favorite teas and put it to the test. Organize your tea collection by type, and enjoy the satisfaction of knowing you created a beautiful and functional storage solution with your own hands.

Happy crafting, and happy steeping!
