Opticks, one of the great works in the history of science, documents Newton's discoveries from his experiments passing light through a prism. He identified the ROYGBIV colors (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet) that make up the visible spectrum. The Science History Institute's BOLD: Color from Test Tube to Textile exhibition used many items from our museum and library collections to tell the story of how we color our world.

Color science is the scientific study of color including lighting and optics; measurement of light and color; the physiology, psychophysics, and modeling of color vision; and color reproduction.
