Color Science History

Opticks, one of the great works in the history of science, documents Newton's discoveries from his experiments passing light through a prism. He identified the ROYGBIV colors (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet) that make up the visible spectrum. The Science History Institute's BOLD: Color from Test Tube to Textile exhibition used many items from our museum and library collections to tell the story of how we color our world.

We have many historical materials on the science, artistic and commercial applications, and marketing of color housed in our Othmer Library in Philadelphia. Color science is the scientific study of color including lighting and optics; measurement of light and color; the physiology, psychophysics, and modeling of color vision; and color reproduction. It is the modern extension of traditional color theory.

Maxwell's work is foundational to modern colorimetry. This part of Chapter 1 contains a brief history of colour theories from a selection of philosophers, scholars, scientists and artists who have made significant contributions to this field. Color science is a flourishing field of science, with a long history that goes back to Newton (and Descartes and Boyle), and includes such famous figures as Young, Maxwell, Helmholtz, and Hering.

A Natural History of Color is a companion piece to The Nature of Color, an exhibition at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City. Infelicitously, the exhibition was scheduled to open in March of 2020, which corresponded with the arrival of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). As of this writing, the museum is still closed.

Nevertheless, the book stands on its own.
