CATHARTIC DISSONANCE (2022-26)
Cathartic Dissonance (an urban allegory) represents a seismic shift in TJ Norris's creative trajectory, moving away from the \"decisive moment\" of traditional photography toward a method of deliberate deconstruction. This expansive body of work, comprising more than one hundred square-format composites, functions as a visual autopsy of the photographic medium itself. By drawing on an extensive personal archive of images gathered over several decades, Norris treats his own history as raw material—\"sandwiching,\" layering, and digitally \"tearing\" files to disrupt the traditional contract of the lens. The result is a profound materiality paradox: these works exist entirely as flat, digital configurations, yet they pulse with a gritty, hyper-tactile depth, creating a trompe-l'œil for the digital age.
The visual language of the series is defined by a rigorous use of geometric abstraction and unstable layering. In works such as Directionless and Set, strong diagonal vectors, repetition, and high-contrast patterning generate a sense of mechanical vibration and perceptual drift. Elsewhere, works like Ghosting, Manifest, and Cross My Path use architectural fragments, caution-strip logic, gridded surfaces, and industrial textures to tether the abstractions to the physical city. This industrial impulse reaches a critical peak in Doublevision and Tipping Point (Infrastration), where high-contrast highway signage, numerical stamps, and structural steel beams are swallowed by fields of saturated orange and gray, mimicking the visual noise of an active construction zone.
The structural grids in Divided We Fall, DataPoints, and Zoned-Out enforce a decentered perspective, deliberately denying the viewer a singular focal point. The eye is forced to scan the perimeters of these high-contrast, monochrome mazes, mimicking the hyper-vigilance and sensory overload required to navigate changing, gentrified, or hostile urban environments. Clean geometric planes are violently split by jagged, organic tears and textured, earth-toned sediment in pieces like Spin The Wheel and Rift II. Similarly, Sleight Of Hand 2 slices smooth, vibrant architectural arcs with rough, gestural sweeps of static black and white. This is not pure formalism, but a calculated tension between structure and rupture, where image-making becomes a mode of excavation as much as composition.
This approach resonates with the Surrealist logic of the exquisite corpse, though filtered through a contemporary digital sensibility. Disparate fragments are sutured into provisional wholes, producing a language built from interruption, adjacency, and visual misregistration. Works like Three Pillars present a triptych of fractured viewpoints, where the physical horizon line is broken and misaligned across vertical columns, echoing the psychological displacement of the modern flâneur. Crucially, this digital sutureship allows the series to collapse linear time. Because Norris mines an archive spanning several decades, a texture captured twenty years ago is forced into a shotgun marriage with a geometric vector generated today. The square frame becomes a non-linear pressure cooker of memory, compressing the historical erosion of the city and the artist's personal biography into a single, flattened plane. The series also carries a strong synaesthetic charge: the images seem to translate urban pressure, memory distortion, and ambient noise into rhythm, color, and spatial interference.
At the same time, the work is deeply rooted in the friction of modern existence, especially the dislocations produced by rapid gentrification, skewed urban planning, and social erasure. Norris finds his source material in the overlooked cracks of the city—alleys, industrial by-ways, and marginal sites where weathered surfaces and distressed textures carry both formal richness and historical residue. In images such as Abridged Quotation, Ancient History, and Specimen, that surface roughness becomes a kind of visual evidence: not merely backdrop, but witness. The work treats the digital screen not as a clean window, but as a site of physical decay, where technology acts as an archeological sediment tracking the way a city buries its own history.
The resulting compositions balance monochromatic starkness with muted, earthy tones and occasional flashes of saturated color, creating a rhythmic pacing that invites repeated looking and, in some cases, a literal double-take. Moving between intimacy and abstraction, between familial loss and cosmic speculation—vividly captured by the celestial rings, lens flares, and floating circular orbs in Cosmic Corruption, Headgame, and Scope—Cathartic Dissonance transcends documentation and enters the register of abstract painting, collage, and psycho-geography. It breathes new life into a long photographic practice by turning accumulation, fracture, and reassembly into its central expressive logic.
Significantly, the titles across the series are doing more than naming—they are framing acts of interpretation. Words like Ghosting, Manifest, Directionless, and Zoned-Out operate simultaneously as urban diagnostics and psychological states, collapsing the distance between the city as external environment and as internal condition. This dual register is one of the series' most quietly radical gestures: the viewer is never permitted to read the work as purely documentary, nor as purely personal. Instead, the titles function as a kind of pressure valve, channeling the series' accumulated tension toward legible emotional and political coordinates without ever reducing the images to illustration.
Nowhere is this more apparent than in Doublevision, where stenciled numerals—monumental in scale, bureaucratic in origin—are layered over fractured architectural planes, producing a work that reads simultaneously as timestamp, warning, and elegy. The numbers carry the weight of institutional time, of urban planning cycles and building permits, yet their displacement into this layered field strips them of administrative authority and reloads them with an almost dystopian charge. They are both evidence of the city's forward march and a premonition of its unresolved debts.
Within the series' persistent formal intensity, Spin The Wheel registers as a deliberately measured counterpoint. Its warmer palette—ochres and tans settling into a quieter visual register—and its loosely orbiting, torn forms suggest drift rather than collision. Against a body of work defined by high-contrast friction, this restraint reads not as a break in logic but as its necessary release valve, proof that the series' dissonance is a managed one, capable of exhale as well as impact.
Equally, the austerity of Zoned-Out—stripped to near-monochrome, its fractured rectangles arranged with something approaching stillness—suggests a work that has moved through rupture and arrived at a kind of formal reckoning. If many of the series' compositions are in the act of tearing, Zoned-Out feels like the aftermath: the site surveyed once the noise has cleared, geometry as the residue of conflict rather than its expression. In this way, the series as a whole charts not just the experience of urban dissonance but its full emotional arc—from the overload of sensation through displacement, drift, and finally, the stripped-back clarity of aftermath.
