TJ Norris is a Texas-based multidisciplinary artist whose career spans over three decades of exploration into the intersection of humankind, and the evolving urban/technological landscape. Educated at the Massachusetts College of Art & Design and the Nova Scotia College of Art & Design, Norris employs a distinctive aesthetic filter—often rooted in the Japanese philosophy of wabi-sabi or the Surrealist \"exquisite corpse\" technique—to capture the friction between the natural and the manufactured. His work serves as an ongoing study of the built environment, documenting the elasticity of time through a conceptual lens that bridges the gap between traditional photography and digital materiality.
Norris’s practice is deeply defined by a continuous evolution in film and lens-based media. His cinematic background is rooted in an immersive approach to time and space, exemplified by early works such as the short auto-porto-matic (1993), curated by Cheryl Dunye for DCTV’s Lookout Festival, and the ambitious 2-channel installation Infinitus (2008), a 72-minute black-and-white feature that projected onto the ceiling to engage viewers in custom-designed lounges. This commitment to the moving image remains a vital aspect of his practice; since 2021, his films have been selected for festivals including the East Village NY Film Festival, the Aperture Festival, and the Absurd Film Festival (Milan), where he received the award for Best Arthouse Film.
Parallel to his cinematic work, Norris is currently engaged in a significant new photographic trajectory: a body of work that functions as a visual autopsy of the medium itself. Moving away from the \"decisive moment\" of traditional photography toward a method of deliberate deconstruction, he draws on an extensive personal archive to \"sandwich,\" layer, and digitally \"tear\" files to disrupt the traditional contract of the lens. By collapsing linear time and compressing decades of collected textures and geometric vectors into square-format composites, he creates a profound materiality paradox that pulses with gritty, hyper-tactile depth. This ongoing photographic pursuit balances monochromatic starkness with earthy tones, transcending simple documentation to enter the register of abstract painting, collage, and psycho-geography. Through this process, technology acts as an archeological sediment, tracking how a city buries its own history.
Norris’s exhibition history is international, with features at institutions including Millepiani (Rome), CoCA Seattle, A4 Museum (Luxelakes, China), and the South Bend Museum of Art. His work has been a fixture at major fairs like Red Dot and Aqua Miami, and he has been supported by residencies at Caldera and the Kimmel Harding Nelson Art Center. Beyond the studio, Norris spent twenty years as a freelance curator, shaping the contemporary dialogue at institutions like Tufts University and SUNY/Binghamton, as well as through his own space, Soundvision, where he fostered experimental audiovisual art.
His first monograph, Shooting Blanks (2018), chronicles a pivotal five-year period of his photographic output and has received international coverage. Today, his work is held in esteemed private and public collections worldwide, including the Library of the Amon Carter Museum of American Art, Harvard University, the Vanhaerents Art Collection (Brussels), Nike, and the Museo de la Ciudad. His practice continues to be a subject of critical acclaim, featured in publications ranging from Leonardo (MIT Press) and The Boston Globe to PhotoBook Journal and Art Ltd.
