Minimum Bathroom Door Size Code

October 17, 2025 -The minimum size of a bathroom doors should be at least32″ wide. June 24, 2020 -In Massachusetts doors to habitable rooms must be at least 30 wide and bathrooms at least28 wideunless they are existing in which case they can be 24 wide. That's only for one state but its a good guide.

We are using 2009 IRC with Massachusetts changes. It looks like we are supposed to use 32 minimum for habitable spaces, but we can go as narrow as28"for bathrooms. 34"-36 for accessible spaces, and for exterior entry doors.

December 6, 2018 -Code for the doorway opening to the bathroom is32 inches, with 34 inches being the recommendation. As you enter the bathroom, the door needs to be able to swing its width into the room without hitting the vanity or toilet.
