Striving to create an inclusive environment, Northeastern University engaged Studio Luz Architects for design services to support future planning initiatives related to campus-wide all-gender restrooms. Studio Luz assessed and provided an in-depth report and design guidelines to support Northeastern's planning effort. Northeastern's new research center, EXP, is full of sleek new spaces and high-tech quirks - a giant neon-lit robotics room, study spaces, automated curtains and the Makerspace.

For example, we've been fighting to get more gender-neutral bathrooms on campus for years. They're still missing from Snell Library, so study sessions have to be interrupted with treks to the top floor (!) of Curry and back. They're also conspicuously absent from the new Interdisciplinary Science & Engineering Complex.

I hate to give away a good spot, but the best bathrooms on campus are 4th floor of Behrakis around the corner to the left when you get off the elevator. A gender-neutral or all-gender restroom is a facility that anyone can use, regardless of gender identity. While these restrooms are becoming more common, the legal framework governing them is a patchwork of federal, state, and local rules.
