The 1980s were a formative period in the development of online communication. While the concept of "chat rooms" as we know them today was not fully realized, there were several pioneering technologies and platforms that laid the groundwork for future online social interactions. Here's a look at how chat.

CompuServe - one of the first consumer online services - launched its CB Simulator in 1980, named after Citizen's Band radio, to let users text. The first [2] dedicated online chat service that was widely available to the public was the CompuServe CB Simulator in 1980, [3] created by CompuServe executive Alexander "Sandy" Trevor in Columbus, Ohio. Chat rooms gained mainstream popularity with AOL.

[4] Jarkko Oikarinen created Internet Relay Chat (IRC) in 1988. I somehow, inadvertently, managed to enter CompuServe's chat rooms the first time via a back door.

As I entered, the system asked for my name (instead of a handle). So I typed in my real name. By the time I realized my (or the system's) mistake, my fate was sealed: everybody knew me as Deirdre', and I have simply been myself online ever.

The advent of the internet in the 1980s marked the beginning of the next stage in the development of chat rooms. It was not necessary for users to log out of early iterations of internet chat rooms like IRC (Internet Relay Chat) in order for additional people to join the conversation. The chat rooms had become a refuge for many teens that hadn't been able to really connect with like-minded people elsewhere in the "real world." For these teens, computers were an integral part of their lives and making friends who thought like them or shared the same interests was like finding lost family.

Platforms like AOL Instant Messenger (AIM), Yahoo! Chat, and IRC (Internet Relay Chat) became the hangouts of choice for a generation of internet users. These chatrooms were the proto-social networks, a place where you could meet strangers, debate whether Ross and Rachel were really on a break, or dive into deep philosophical discussions with people you'd never met in.
