They are made from dense clay fired at high temperatures, resulting in a tile that is resistant to moisture, stains, and scratches. When choosing porcelain tiles, consider the following:

Mix thinset mortar according to the manufacturer's instructions. Using a straight-edged trowel, spread the mortar onto the surface, ensuring it's evenly distributed. Then, use a notched trowel to create grooves in the mortar.

Install the Tiles

Starting from your planned starting point, press the tiles firmly into the mortar, using spacers to maintain even grout lines. Work in small sections, ensuring each tile is level and properly spaced. Allow the mortar to set according to the manufacturer's instructions before proceeding.

Cutting Tiles

If you need to cut tiles, use a tile cutter or wet saw. Always wear safety glasses and follow the tool's instructions. For intricate cuts, consider renting a wet saw from a hardware store.

Apply Grout

Once the mortar has set, remove the spacers and apply grout using a grout float, working diagonally to force the grout into the joints. Allow the grout to set for the recommended time, then clean the tiles with a damp sponge.

Seal the Tiles

After the grout has cured, apply a sealer to protect the tiles and grout from stains and moisture. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for application and drying times.

Maintenance and Care

Regular cleaning and maintenance will keep your porcelain tiles looking their best. Sweep or vacuum the area regularly, and clean spills promptly. For deeper cleaning, use a mild detergent and warm water. Avoid using abrasive cleaners or steel wool, as they can scratch the tiles.

Embracing a DIY porcelain tile project allows you to create a unique, personalized space while learning a valuable skill. With careful planning and attention to detail, your installation will not only look professional but also stand the test of time.
