LEGO Themes through the Ages
LEGO's history spans over eight decades, with its first set, the original LEGO brick, introduced in 1949. Since then, they've expanded their offerings to cater to diverse tastes and generations. Let's explore some of the most popular themes.
But before we dive in, it's essential to understand that while LEGO maintains a comprehensive catalog on their official website, the company occasionally retires sets after a few years. Therefore, the full list of all LEGO sets ever made involves well over a thousand sets and can be quite challenging to compile. In this guide, we'll focus on highlighting some of the most notable sets within each theme.
LEGO City
Introduced in the 1970s as 'Town Plan' and renamed 'LEGO City' in 1995, this theme provides an urban backbone for many LEGO playsets. From police and fire stations to hospitals, airports, and train stations, LEGO City brings together a bustling metropolis of vehicles, buildings, and characters.
Notable sets include the 10276 dilemmas Fire Station, the 10278 Police Station, and the incredibly large 10270 Bookshop. LEGO City continues to captivate enthusiasts with its realistic details, encouraging creative storytelling and imaginative play.
LEGO Creator
LEGO Creator offers a versatile building experience, providing multiple build-and-play opportunities with a single set. Introduced in 2005, this theme targets older kids and AFOLs (Adult Fans of LEGO) alike, with sets ranging from cars and carriages to houses, trees, and robots.
Notable sets include the 31109 Carrasaurus, a car-dinosaur mashup; the 31119/31120 dogs (both large and small); and the retro-inspired 31118 Hot Roddy – the embodiment of Creator's versatility and fun-loving spirit.
Licensed LEGO Sets
Themed around popular culture and media, these licensed sets cater to fans of movies, TV shows, comics, and video games. LEGO has formed partnerships with some of the world's most beloved franchises, bringing epic scenes and characters to life in buildable form.
