Why do Rally cars sound so different? What you hear most of the time is the turbo spooling up, as well as the anti-lag system which keeps the turbo spooled when shifting and or slowing down. You will notice different sounds from the exhaust, such as the subaru having a boxer engine will sound differently from say the skoda inline 4. Why do rally cars make a chirping sound? It's part of an anti-lag system which uses a specialized external wastegate on the forced induction system.

The wastegate works in small increments releasing boost (chirps) (rather than just dumping all of it) in an attempt to maintain optimal boost at all times, eliminating "turbo lag". GT cars, LeMans cars, Rally cars, they all chirp when braking, whether they have a turbo or not. Road cars with floating rotors don't chirp, because they put springs on every other rotor fixing nut. I come across videos of Rally cars, and played Dirt Rally, and in almost every documentation I see Rally cars have a different, high pitch and powerful sound, accompanied by loud bangs.
What's happening? different engines or engine enhancments?
