Before laying a single plank, you must assess the slab. Conduct a moisture test using a meter to ensure the concrete is dry enough for flooring. Sweep and vacuum the area thoroughly to remove any dust, dirt, or debris that could interfere with the adhesion of the underlayment or the stability of the floor.
Leveling the Surface
Concrete slabs often have imperfections, cracks, or uneven spots. SPC requires a flat surface to lock correctly; otherwise, the planks will gap or buckle. Use a long straight edge to check for dips and high spots. Apply a self-leveling concrete compound to any low areas, following the manufacturer's mixing instructions. Allow the compound to cure completely before proceeding to the next step.

Phase 2: Installing the Underlayment
While not always mandatory, installing a foam underlayment is highly recommended. This layer provides a final smoothing effect, adds slight cushioning for comfort, and acts as a moisture barrier. Roll out the underlayment perpendicular to the direction you plan to lay the planks. Phase 3: Placing the First Row
Start by selecting the longest wall in the room to begin installation. If the room is longer than the planks, you will need to cut the boards to length at the end of the run. For the first row, place the planks with the groove side facing the wall. Use plastic spacers to maintain a consistent 1/4" expansion gap between the flooring and the wall to allow for natural movement.
Do not interlock the planks yet at this stage. Focus on getting the row straight and ensuring the ends are properly aligned. If the concrete slab is irregular, you may need to trim the first row slightly to ensure a clean starting edge.
Phase 4: Locking and Connecting the Boards
Once the first row is set, move on to installing the subsequent rows. Tilt the groove of the new plank at a 45-degree angle and slide the tongue into the groove of the previous row. Gently tap the plank into place using a tapping block and a rubber mallet to ensure a tight, seamless connection.
As you progress across the room, stagger the end joints of the planks by at least 6 inches to create a visually appealing and stable pattern. Use the pull bar to snug the planks tightly against the previous row, ensuring the core is compressed fully for a secure lock.
Phase 5: Trimming and Finalizing the Installation
When you reach the final wall, measure the gap and mark the plank accordingly. Cut the board using a tropical saw, ensuring you maintain the expansion gap. Place the last row, using the pull bar to lock it firmly against the preceding row. Remove the spacers from the perimeter once the installation is complete.
To finish the look, you can install transition strips where the flooring meets doorways or other types of flooring in adjacent rooms. Now that the installation is done, allow the floor to acclimate and settle for a few hours before moving heavy furniture back into the space.
