Installing a new delta kitchen faucet can seem like a daunting task, but with the right preparation and a clear understanding of the process, it becomes a straightforward DIY project that transforms the look and function of your kitchen. This guide walks you through each step, ensuring you achieve a professional-looking result with a steady hand and the proper tools.
Before you begin the installation, it is crucial to gather all necessary tools and verify that your sink configuration is compatible with the new fixture. Delta faucets are known for their quality and design, but a successful upgrade depends on meticulous preparation. Taking the time to read these instructions fully will save you time and prevent frustration down the line.
Preparing for the Installation
The first and most critical step is to turn off the water supply to your kitchen. You will typically find the shut-off valves located under the sink; turn them clockwise to stop the flow of hot and cold water. To ensure no residual water interferes with your work, open the faucet in the sink and let it run until it is completely empty.

While the water drains, gather your tools. You will usually need an adjustable wrench, a Basin Wrench for the difficult-to-reach nuts under the sink, channel-lock pliers, a screwdriver set, and plumber’s tape. Having a bucket and some rags handy is also wise to manage any drips or residual water that remains in the lines.
Removing the Old Faucet
With the water off and the area prepared, disconnect the water supply lines by loosening the nuts that connect them to the valves. Use your basin wrench to grip the stubborn nuts under the sink if your standard wrench cannot reach them. Be careful to support the lines so they do not swing back and damage the surrounding fixtures.
Next, remove the mounting nuts that secure the faucet to the sink deck. These are often located directly underneath the lip of the sink. Once these nuts are loosened and removed, you can carefully lift the old faucet out of the sink. Remember that the flexible supply lines are still attached, so lower them gently to avoid splashing water.

Installing the New Delta Faucet
With the old fixture removed, inspect the sink hole for any debris or mineral buildup. Clean the area thoroughly to ensure a smooth surface for the new Delta faucet. Now, you will assemble the components of your new faucet according to the manufacturer's instructions, which usually involves attaching the handles to the spout body and inserting the gaskets that provide a watertight seal.
Carefully thread the faucet’s mounting assembly up through the hole in the sink. Once positioned correctly, place the rubber or plastic gasket onto the underside, followed by the mounting nut. Hand-tighten the nut to secure the faucet, then use your basin wrench to give it a final snug turn. Be mindful not to overtighten, as this can crack the sink’s finish or ceramic body.
Connecting the Water Supply and Testing
With the faucet physically installed, it is time to reconnect the water supply lines. Wrap fresh plumber’s tape around the threads of the supply line nuts to create a tighter seal and prevent future leaks. Use your wrench to fasten the hot and cold lines securely to the corresponding valves on the back of the Delta faucet.
Finally, turn the shut-off valves counterclockwise to restore water flow. Slowly turn the new faucet handles to allow water to flow through the lines, flushing out any air trapped in the system. Check all connections meticulously for drips, and tighten any connections that leak. Once the faucet operates smoothly and without leaks, your installation is complete.
