The BMW M1 Procar Championship, sometimes known simply as Procar, was a one-make auto racing series which featured professional drivers from the Formula One World Championship, World Sportscar Championship, European Touring Car Championship, and other international series, using identically modified BMW M1 sports cars. The BMW M1 Procar Revival 2019. On July 5-7, BMW M1 Procar fans attended a very special event at the Norisring as part of the DTM weekend.

40 years after its racetrack debut, the BMW Group Classic brought 14 models of the legendary Procar Series BMW M1 back to the starting grid. The BMW M1 Procar series only lasted two years, yet it still feels weirdly modern: identical cars, absurd driver lineup, and racing that mattered because nobody had a mechanical excuse. BMW ran it.

Today, thirty years after the M1 was first shown to the public, it is considered one of the most legendary BMWs ever built, but its conception, construction and racing career were far from trouble free. The M1 was very much the brainchild of BMW Motorsport's found Jochen Neerpasch. The first true M1 Procar prototype was completed on December 5th 1978.

Testing and development continued from winter into spring, but the M1 didn't appear in its final Group 4 trim until April 29th when a works car was entered for a race-test at the DRM Nurburgring event where BMW Junior driver Marc Surer (who won the weekend's F2 contest driving a BMW-powered March) qualified seventh. The BMW-M1-PROCAR-Series For two years, namely in 1979 and 1980, the BMW M1 drove in Europe as part of the supporting program for Formula 1. BMW had found an ingenious way to be present in the Grand Prix circus without investing enormous sums of money.

Finished by BMW on 9 May 1979, this particular M1 was race prepared by Osella in Italy and acquired by one of the most notable luminaries in American racing. We interviewed him at Norisring, during an event held to mark the 40th anniversary of the BMW M1 Procar championship, last year. Fast forward 28 years to 30 June 2008 and BMW held a Procar revival exhibition event at the German Grand Prix at Hockenheim, involving ten original M1 Procars driven by several drivers who had participated in the original series.
