The term 'BMW shift fart' refers to the subtle, often high-pitched sound produced when engaging a manual or automated gear shift, typically marked by a brief, resonant pop or hiss. This phenomenon stems from hydraulic or electromagnetic actuators within the transmission responding to driver input, creating a momentary release of pressure that some describe as a mechanical 'fart'—not an insult, but a signature of dynamic drivetrain operation.

This acoustic quirk arises from a combination of factors: the rapid movement of shift forks in manual transmissions, fluid displacement in semi-automatic systems, and the electronic control unit’s precise timing. While modern transmissions are engineered for silence, the inherent complexity of gear shifting—especially under load—can trigger these faint emissions, particularly during aggressive acceleration or gear changes.

For most drivers, the shift fart is harmless and even endearing—a whisper of mechanical character. I have a client with a x5 30d 8spd who asked if it's possible to make it make a sound when shifting (dsg fart) I didn't think it was possible on a diesel but he says his friends 50d does it. Wondering if you can turn off the shift farts on a 340i? Imo I don't rlly like that sound and I'm thinking of buying in but need to make sure I can turn that off. You're right, traditionally the "DSG fart" sound is associated with cars equipped with Dual-Clutch Transmission (DCT) like the Volkswagen Group's DSG.
However, the BMW M240i you mentioned actually uses a different type of transmission called an 8-speed Steptronic Sport automatic transmission. So, what's causing the "fart" noise in the M240i then?
