[1] The atmosphere of Earth consists of a layer of mixed gas (commonly referred to as air) that is retained by gravity, surrounding the Earth 's surface.

The atmosphere of Earth appears blue to the human eye from the surface. But the actual color of the atmosphere is more complex than it seems. The atmosphere is made up of different gases, particles, and molecules that influence how light interacts with it.

Earth's atmosphere is mostly transparent to visible light with a blue tint caused by the preferential scattering of blue sunlight by the nitrogen and oxygen molecules. Clouds of water droplets and ice crystals form up to about 10 kilometers above the surface. The droplets and crystals are large enough to reflect all wavelengths of visible equally, so the clouds have a white color.

Because of. Earth's atmosphere is so much more than the air we breathe. A trip from the surface of Earth to outer space would result in passing through five different layers, each with very different characteristics.

The sky appears orange in this image thanks to Earth's atmosphere. Molecules in the atmosphere scatter rays of white sunlight into separate wavelengths of light. The length of these wavelengths determine the color we perceive with our eyes.

The air itself is transparent (meaning that we can see through it) and it doesn't have any color. But, when the sun shines on Earth's atmosphere the light is bent and scattered by many particles in the atmosphere. Because of a special way that light is designed, different colors of light bend differently when they go through a transparent object.

Layers of the Earth's Atmosphere The atmosphere of the earth is the layer of gases (commonly called air) that surrounds the earth and creates an inhabitable environment, maintains temperature, causes weather, and protects its inhabitants from solar radiation. Earth's Atmosphere: Our Fragile Lifeline (image credits: wikimedia) From space, it becomes crystal clear: Earth's atmosphere is both a shield and a cradle. It protects us from deadly radiation, keeps the climate stable, and sustains every living thing.

Yet, it is delicate, easily scarred by pollution, climate change, and careless actions. What colour is Earth? The "Blue Marble" photo of Earth taken in 1972 by the crew of Apollo 17 on their way to the Moon. Short answer: Mostly blue, with some green, brown and white.

Long answer: There are several main colours of the planet Earth, the dominant colour being blue. This comes from the oceans and the atmosphere. The Earth's atmosphere is an extremely thin sheet of air extending from the surface of the Earth to the edge of space.

The Earth is a sphere with a roughly 8000 mile diameter; the thickness of the atmosphere is about 60 miles. In this picture, taken from a spacecraft orbiting at 200 miles above the surface, we can see the atmosphere as the thin blue band between the surface and the blackness.
