Groups & Themes for Final Project
Growth Mindset e-book
Jenna Berkenkamp, Mary Gruen, and Maddy Bayer are working on an idea involving teaching growth mindset through an e-book in which the child’s mother records her voice reading the narrative to the child. We are hoping to incorporate research that points to the neuroscience involved when children hear their mother’s voices – we think this aspect, in addition to elements of narrative/character customization to suit each child’s interests, will help engage young children in reading.
Long Distance Family Relationships
Vivian Chen, Alice Fang, and Edric Kyauk will be looking at long distance family relationships and potentially interviewing/observing the family of a 3 year old girl in East Palo Alto and her grandparents in Hawaii.

Game Prototype to address STEM barriers faced by women
Jessica Kung and Matthew Mistele plan to prototype the game, field-test it, ground it in research, and target it for a specific audience and age group (which they’re still determining).
Historical-Fantasy Math Game
Matthew Mistele is creating a math game. (It’s a historical-fantasy puzzle game where players learn/reinvent numeracy concepts in a way roughly similar to how humanity itself developed them). Matthew plans to use the class project to ground this math game in developmental research and interviews.
