WHAT IF<\/strong>
\nWhat if we could develop a video interface and digital bookmarking tool that would encourage and enable students to collaborate?<\/p>\n

WHAT WE SET OUT TO DO<\/strong>
\nWe set out to pilot a new user interface during a live Stanford University engineering course, offered by the Stanford Center for Professional Development (SCPD) in a streaming media format, so that we could fine-tune the interface in a real classroom environment. The new UI would feature high resolution video and a \u2018bookmarking’ tool for creating personal notated bookmarks in synchronization with the video. The tool would create an accurate indexing of online media content and enable faculty, teaching assistants and students to collaborate and pool bookmarks with others in the class.<\/p>\n

WHAT WE FOUND<\/strong>
\nStudents had a positive experience with the new interface. However, during the first trial, there was a negative consequence in that the bookmarks created by the Teachers Assistants (TA\u2019s) were so good that students did not collaborate to develop their own. For the second trial, researchers provided the online media bookmarking tool and interface for all ten courses. During this second trial, TA\u2019s did not create the bookmarks, and the SCPD staff monitored usage via the administrative interface. The second trial demonstrated more collaboration among students.<\/p>\n

PEOPLE BEHIND THE PROJECT<\/strong>
\n\"Terry<\/a>Terry Winograd<\/a><\/strong> is Professor Ermeritus of Computer Science at Stanford University. Professor Winograd\u2019s focus is on human-computer interaction design and the design of technologies for development. He founded and directed the teaching programs and HCI research in the Stanford Human-Computer Interaction Group. He was a founding faculty member of the Hasso Plattner Institute of Design at Stanford (the \u201cd.school\u201d) and on the faculty of the Center on Democracy, Development, and the Rule of Law (CDDRL). Winograd was a founding member and past president of Computer Professionals for Social Responsibility.<\/p>\n

\"Michael<\/a>Michael Rouan<\/a><\/strong> is currently the Senior Director of Academic Technology Innovation at the Office of the Vice Provost for Teaching and Learning (VPTL). Previous to this Michael had a 25-year run in media\/ed tech-related titles and responsibilities at the Stanford Center for Professional Development (SCPD). Prior to Stanford, taught in San Francisco State University’s Educational Technology Master’s program, and coordinated the broadcast schedule of the University’s cable television station as staff of the AV\/ITV Center.<\/p>\n

\"Maggie<\/a>As of 2017, Maggie Johnson<\/strong><\/a> is Director of Education and University Relations for Google. At the time of the project, Dr. Johnson was Director of Educational Affairs in the Department of Computer Science at Stanford University where she was responsible for the Undergraduate and Masters programs in CS.
