Cairo Metro Hyundai Rotem

Hyundai Rotem has been working on the Egyptian rolling stock market for ten years, having received in 2012 its first contract worth $250 mln for the supply of 20 nine. The National Authority for Tunnels (NAT) has signed a $656m contract with South Korea's Hyundai Rotem to supply rolling stock for lines 2 and 3 of the Cairo Metro. Hyundai will deliver the units in consortium with the local NERIC (National Egyptian Railway Industries Company).

Hyundai said its share of the 70-month contract is worth $563m. CAIRO - 24 June 2024: The Arab Organization for Industrialization (AOI) organized Monday a ceremony to celebrate manufacturing 10 air-conditioned metro trains -consisting of a total of 80 railcars - at SEMAF Factory in collaboration with Hyundai Rotem. The two parties had signed a $656-million deal to locally manufacture and supply 32 air-conditioned metro trains for Greater Cairo's Line 3.

A total of 34 metro trains will be rolled out in Egypt, while the remaining six will be shipped from Hyundai Rotem's factory in South Korea. Hyundai Rotem, an affiliate of global automaker Hyundai Motor, first tapped into the Egyptian market in 2012 by inking a deal to build trains for the first line in Cairo's metro. The National Egyptian Railway Industries Co (NERIC) and Hyundai Rotem signed an agreement for the supply of 40 8-car trains (320 cars) for Cairo metro lines 1 and 2 and for train manufacturing localisation.

Founded in 1977, Hyundai Rotem manufactures rolling stock, defence products and plant equipment, and has supplied various types of railway vehicles to 38 countries, according to its website. The company supplied 20 air-conditioned trains for Cairo Metro's line one, six trains for the second line and 22 out of 32 total trains for the third line. Hyundai Rotem shipped the first of 32 trains for the phase three extension to Cairo metro Line 3 from Korea on May 26.
