Downer was awarded the Design Build Maintain Contract for the program this year and has partnered with the Hyundai Rotem Corporation for the manufacturing of the 65 new trains. Major works are under way at the Torbanlea facility to transform a former pineapple farm into Australia's newest state. Hyundai Rotem, a South Korean railway system maker under Hyundai Motor Group, said on Friday that it had won a major contract in Australia alongside local railway company Downer as part of the Queensland Train Manufacturing Program (QTMP).

The project, valued at 1.22 trillion won ($917 million), will run until December 18, 2031. QTMP is a Queensland state government initiative designed to. In a statement, Hyundai Rotem said its role would be to support 'vehicle design and material purchase for technology transfer and local. In the consortium, Hyundai Rotem will design the train, procure components, ensure technology transfer for local production and carry out warranty repairs, while Downer Rail will build the trains and production facilities in Queensland and establish a depot. The future fleet is expected to be operational in time for the 2032 Olympic Games.
