70s style tables is making a comeback, and it's not just about nostalgia. The funky, retro vibe of mid-century modern furniture is adding a dash of sophistication to home decor around the world.
The 70s were a time of great creativity and experimentation in design, and it's no surprise that the iconic tables of the era are back in style. Whether you're a seasoned collector or just starting out, this guide will cover the basics of 70s style tables, from essential features to buying tips and decorating ideas.
What Defines a 70s Style Table?
A 70s style table typically has a few distinct characteristics that set it apart from more modern pieces. Some of the key features include:
- Unique shapes: 70s tables often have unusual shapes, such as rounded or curved legs, tapered or flared silhouettes, or irregularly shaped tops.
- Materials: Wooden tables from this era often feature distinctive materials, like macramé netting, wicker, or rattan.
- Ornate details: Many vintage 70s tables boast intricate carvings, inlays, or other ornate details.
- Colors: Expect a bold, vibrant color palette, often featuring a mix of brights, pastels, and earth tones.
Bar stools are not part of the 70s furniture we refer to when discussing 70s tables. Bar stools were more commonly seen in bars and restaurants and are not generally associated with 70s style home decor.
Popular 70s Style Table Types
There were several types of tables that made their debut during the 1970s, each with its own unique charm. Some of the most iconic types include:
- Macramé Coffee Tables: These tables used plant fibers to create intricate, geometric patterns.
- Mirror Tables: Tables with a reflective surface were a staple of disco-era decor. These were often made of silver-leafed tops and adorned with irregular shapes.
- Wooden Side Tables: Với a strong emphasis on sustainability during the 1970s, wooden side tables made from sustainably sourced wood materials like reclaimed wood became increasingly popular.
Vintage vs. Reproduction 70s Style Tables
Finding a genuine, vintage 70s table can be a challenge, especially if you're on a budget. In this case, reproduction tables are a viable alternative. Reproduction 70s tables offer the same look and feel as their vintage counterparts but may lack the unique history and character that comes with an original piece.
Some things to keep in mind when shopping for a reproduction 70s table include:
- Quality: Not all reproductions are created equal. Look for tables made with high-quality materials and craftsmanship.
- Authenticity: Choose a reproduction that captures the spirit of the original, but avoid copies that feel too perfect or losing the charm of the era.
- Price: Reproduction tables tend to be more affordable than genuine vintage pieces.
Decorating with 70s Style Tables
Incorporating a 70s style table into your home can add a dash of retro flair to your space. Some tips for decorating with these tables include:
- Mix and match: Combine a 70s style table with modern furniture to create a eclectic, mid-century modern look.
- Lighting: Use table lamps or floor lamps with unique shapes and colors to create a cohesive 1970s look.
- Patterns: Incorporate shag rugs, abstract patterns, and bold textiles to complete the 70s vibe.
