I believe the ki color is chosen by their mood (credit to Insertclevername), their alliance (Pure, Good, Middle, Bad), and intentions of attacks. For example Freeza's attacks are mostly dark colors. Purple, Dark yellow-orange, black, and dark red. His alliance is purely evil. Generic attacks are mostly yellow.

27 votes, 37 comments. trueI understand they took liberties with character colors (let's ignore orange Vegeta) like Trunks and Freiza, but I wish they would remain consistent with the colorings. If they were going to make Future Trunks' hair blue they should have also retconned lil Trunks' or explained that his hair changes color or something. They had better also explain why Frieza changes.
