I had a 540i as a loaner vehicle with my M2 in the shop and I was very surprised by how nimble it felt for such a large car. Keep in mind it has a mild hybrid assist system too so you're getting electric torque off the line. It moves, and a simple tune will take you over 400hp for $600 or so.

The reliability of the M550 has not been particularly good which is true of damn near any V8 BMW. I just picked up a 2022 M550 (19" all season RFT, non-DHP) to replace my 2021 540xi (19" all seasons RFT, non-DHP) that I traded in due to the crazy used car market and can say the ride quality in comfort mode on M550 is identical or perhaps even better (maybe the Pirelli P7s on the M550 are nicer than the previous Continental DSWs). Reliability and efficiency 100% get the 540i, i have a 2020 540 and i love it to death, so smooth, so comfortable.
