How To Make A Whisk Broom

Join Education Coordinator Kyle Sandler for a short video on how to make a basic whisk broom. This instructional video was made in conjunction with our 2021. This DIY whisk broom is a useful and decorative craft that will add a beautiful cottage touch to your space.

For our foray into broom-making, we're keeping things simple by looking to one of my favorite gardening go-tos for inspiration: the whisk broom. It's the perfect petite broom to tackle any house-plant potting spills, seed-starting soil drops, or even just to dust corners and cobwebs. Add the next bundle of broom corn, placing it flat against the first two bundles for a broom you'll use on floors or hearths or in a circular design for a smaller whisk broom.

Continue the process, attaching new bundles one by one, until all of the broom corn is attached securely. You will also need a sharp kitchen knife or broom knife, scissors, a lighter, and a hand towel to protect your lap when cutting your broomcorn. A rubber band or scrap piece of twine will also be helpful.

Because brooms are made under tension, once you start making your broom you will need to complete it in one sitting. While meeting in a circle we will discuss the history of Brooms. During this time we will all be given materials to make your very own Whisk Broom.

Step by step, I teach you how to weave together a useful tool that is not only used for cleaning but can also be used for ritual practice. There is a unique way to sweep which utilizes mindful movements. You will leave this class with a whisk broom.
