The fourth generation of BMW 5 Series was introduced for the 1997 model year. Known as the E39, the fourth generation 5 Series was offered as a sedan or a station wagon. The E39 was offered with inline 6 and V8 gasoline engines, as well as inline 4 and inline 6 diesel engines, although no all wheel drive variant was produced.

Notable variants for the fourth generation 5 Series include the 520i. The BMW E39 is the fourth generation of the BMW 5 Series range of executive cars, which was manufactured from 1995 to 2004. It was launched in the saloon body style, with the station wagon body style (marketed as "Touring") introduced in 1996.

The E39 540i Touring was powered by BMW's M62B44 engine, which was a 4.4L V8 engine that generated 282hp and 325 lb ft of torque that was sent to the rear wheels through a 5 speed automatic transmission.
