While it might seem like a job for a professional, the process is straightforward with the right tools and a bit of patience. This guide walks you through every step of installing a new sink drain, ensuring a watertight seal and a finished look that lasts.
Understanding the Drain Assembly Components
Before you begin, it helps to understand the parts you will be dealing with. A standard sink drain assembly consists of several key pieces that work together to prevent water from leaking into the cabinet below. The primary components include the drain body, which sits directly in the sink hole; the rubber or fiber gasket that creates the initial water barrier; the locknut that secures the body in place; the large mounting nut; and the various washers and the tailpiece that connects to the P-trap.
Tools and Materials You Will Need
Gathering everything you need beforehand prevents the frustration of stopping mid-project to hunt for a tool. Having a basin wrench is critical, as the space under the sink is often too tight for a standard wrench. You will also need an assortment of adjustable wrenches, channel-lock pliers, a putty knife, and a flashlight. For materials, ensure you have the correct replacement gaskets and, if necessary,a new length of drain tailpiece and the proper mounting hardware.

Step 1: Shut Off the Water and Clear the Area
Safety and preparation are the foundation of any successful plumbing task. While a drain installation does not require cutting water supply lines, you must ensure no water is running through the pipes. Turn on the faucet in the sink to drain any residual water and allow the system to equalize pressure. Place a towel or shallow bin in the cabinet to catch any drips and provide a clean surface for your tools.
Step 2: Disassemble the Old Drain
With the sink area clear, use a basin wrench to loosen the large mounting nut located just beneath the sink. Once this nut is loose, use your channel-lock pliers to unscrew the locknut and remove the drain body from the opening. Carefully lift out the old rubber gasket; inspect the condition of the drain tailpipe for any cracks or corrosion. Cleaning the residue of the old gasket from the sink flange ensures the new seal will adhere properly without gaps.
Step 3: Install the New Gasket and Drain Body
Most new drain assemblies come with a pre-installed gasket, but it is wise to verify this. Place a fresh gasket onto the drain body, ensuring it aligns correctly with the contours of the sink hole. From the underside of the sink, insert the drain body into the opening. Finger-tighten the locknut onto the threads to hold the body in position, but do not apply full force yet. It is crucial to hold the drain body steady with one hand while tightening the nut underneath to prevent the assembly from twisting misaligned.

Step 4: Tighten the Hardware Securely
Using the basin wrench, grip the locknut securely and apply firm pressure to tighten it against the sink deck. Alternate this with tightening the large mounting nut on the underside of the sink. The goal here is to achieve a snug fit; overtightening can strip the threads or crack the porcelain of the sink, while under-tightening will lead to future leaks. Hand-tight plus a quarter to half turn with the tools is typically sufficient to create a reliable seal.
Step 5: Connect the Tailpiece and Test for Leaks
With the drain body secured, attach the tailpiece—the vertical pipe segment—by connecting it to the bottom of the drain body. Use the slip-nut and washer provided to secure this connection. Finally, attach the P-trap assembly, ensuring washers are correctly seated. Turn the water back on and let the faucet run for a minute. Check all the connections for moisture or drips. If you see a leak, tighten the specific nut causing the issue slightly more until the water flow stops.
